Example SMART Goals for Career Readiness Competencies
1. Career & Self-Development
SMART Goal:

2. Communication
SMART Goal:
By the end of the semester (December 11), I will improve my written communication skills by visiting the Writing Center for feedback on three major papers and revising each based on their input.
3. Critical Thinking
SMART Goal:
During the fall semester, I will attend at least three campus lectures or discussion panels outside my major and write a 1-page reflection after each, analyzing ways the information could help me in my chosen professional field.
4. Equity & Inclusion
SMART Goal:
By the end of the semester, I will participate in at least two cultural or diversity-focused events on campus and reflect on each by writing a short journal entry to better understand experiences different from my own.
5. Leadership
SMART Goal:
This semester, I will take on a leadership role in my student organization by organizing at least one event and delegating responsibilities among team members, then ask for feedback from the advisor afterward.
6. Professionalism
SMART Goal:
By October 15, I will update my LinkedIn profile, attend a resume review session, and submit my application to at least three on-campus jobs or internships to demonstrate professional readiness.
7. Teamwork
SMART Goal:
In my group project for [specific course], I will schedule weekly check-ins with my teammates and volunteer to manage the shared document, ensuring we stay on track and complete the project by the due date.
8. Technology
SMART Goal:
By the end of the semester, I will complete LinkedIn Learning’s Excel Essentials course and apply those skills by using spreadsheets to track and analyze my student club’s budget.
