What is a Micro Fellowship?
An opportunity to make explicit connections between a student’s Wooster education and their future goals.
The Micro Fellowship program provides small stipends for short-term internships where students engage in a work environment that provides them with relevant experiences and assists with clarifying post-graduation goals.
Students are eligible to receive the Micro Fellowship award twice during their time at Wooster.
Financial Support
- For remote or on-site unpaid or underpaid (under $15/hr) internships: $600
Who is eligible? Students who
- Are in good academic standing
- Are in good standing under the code of Academic Integrity & Social Responsibility
- Are enrolled at The College of Wooster, or in an endorsed off-campus study program, the semesters preceding and following the internship.
International students with F-1 visas
- International Students may intern in their home country with no additional requirements.
- International Students interning while in the U.S. (on-site or remote) must follow all requirements related to registering for credit and CPT and verifying the internship is directly related to their major. Students should make appointments with ISS and the Associate Dean for Experiential Learning in APEX.
What types of experiences are eligible?
- Internships completed over winter break or summer break only.
- An internship of at least 45 hours in duration
- The internship must begin after final exams of the current semester.
- The internship must end before the first day of class of the following semester
- Unpaid internships (remote or on-site; winter or summer break) who have not received funding from other College of Wooster sources
–OR-
- Underpaid, on-site internships (receive payment or a stipend at a rate less than $15/hour) who need to pay for housing and/or transportation costs
Internships that are ineligible for funding include working:
- for a College of Wooster office / program
- for programs already funded by the College of Wooster (e.g. APEX Fellowships, AMRE, Sophomore Research, ARCH, etc.)
- with a College of Wooster professor on a research project
- at your family’s enterprise
- under the direct supervision of a family member
- in any other situation that does not follow best practice as evaluated by APEX
Requirements for Micro Fellowship Recipients
Recipients will be enrolled in a course on the Training Moodle platform and will:
- Complete pre-experience preparation work
- Complete a career exploration activity using Ask a Scot
- Submit a 500-750 word written reflection responding to the provided prompts
- Submit 3-4 photos of themselves engaged in their internship
How are funds distributed?
Funds are awarded upon receipt of the Micro Fellowship application. Funds are dispersed the semester following the internship after we receive:
- a signed acceptance letter
- internship hours are completed and verified
- Training Moodle assignments are submitted and checked for thoroughness.
All payments are by direct deposit to the student’s U.S. bank account.
What is the deadline for applying?
Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and students are encouraged to apply early in case funds run out. Applications are due on the last day of class each semester.
