Medications & Prescription Drugs

Students should take copies of all prescriptions along with required prescription drugs. These should be packed in their carry-on bag to prevent loss. If possible, students should take sufficient prescription medicine to last for their entire study abroad experience.

If refills are required while you are overseas, develop a plan with your doctor and in-country advisor. You may be able to fill the prescriptions overseas, or you may wish to have them mailed from home.

Note: Some FDA-approved medications (Ritalin or gender-affirming hormones, for example) are considered controlled substances and may be illegal in some countries. Please consult with your program provider about steps to take to ensure access to your medication abroad, or work with your doctor to find alternative treatments.
